Stephens was a key contributor to the Pearl in 2011
IRVINE, Calif. --- Jeff Stephens (Novato/Sierra College) was voted the Big West Player of the Week after keying UC Irvine to a winning record this week, including a series win against Nevada.
UCI played five games in five days and Stephens topped the Anteaters by posting 10 hits (10 for 22) to hit .455 and up his batting average to .400. Stephens has recorded multiple hits in six of the last seven games, including four straight.
Against Pepperdine, his RBI hit gave UCI an early one-run lead and against Washington State, the transfer singled and scored the winning run while batting a season-best 3 for 5 with an RBI. He logged his third straight game with a run batted in while batting 2 for 4 in the series opener against Nevada and he went 2 for 4 again the next day to help UCI tie the series. In that game, his two-out single sparked a four-run sixth that put the game out of reach. In the rubber game, Stephens doubled twice with one of his extra-base hits sparking a two-run inning that tied the game in an eventual 6-5, 10 inning win.
This is the first honor for Stephens, who is hitting .400 on the year with 16 hits and five RBI.
