Looking to pick up a few more non-league wins to add to their impressive record, the Neptune Beach Pearl traveled to Carson City, NV, to take on the Nevada Bighorns July 10th and 11th.
The first game saw the Pearl pick up a 14-10 victory against the Bighorns July 10th. The next day, the Pearl struck early with Bob Cruikshank (USF) hitting an RBI single in the first to get the offense started. Gary Detwiler (Sonoma State) hit a leadoff double and was sent home after Oscar Aguirre (Florida International) smack an RBI double. Shortly after, Richie Johnson (San Jose State) knocked in an RBI single to give the Pearl a 3-0 lead in the second, and Cruikshank came up big again, scoring Clay Williamson (Cal State Fullerton) with a 2 RBI homerun in the third. After giving up two runs in the fourth and the seventh, the Pearl managed to continue to shine offensively and pick up four runs in the top of the eighth. Once again, Johnson managed to produce with an RBI in the ninth, with Joe Moroney (Kansas) knocking in a 2 RBI double to make the final score 12-6, giving the Pearl the win and sweeping the series over the Bighorns.
After this road trip, the Pearl now stand at 21-11 on the season. The July 12th game against the NorCal Longhorns was postponed, and the Pearl now returns home for a 1st Place showdown with the Humboldt Crabs July 13th-15th.
