Pearl Fall To Legends In Game 1 of Playoffs

Kicking off the first round of the playoffs August 3rd, the Neptune Beach Pearl took on the Menlo Park Legends as they hoped to move on to the second round in the Far West League championships.

            The Pearl struck early, knocking out three hits and capitalizing on an error to go up 3-0 in the top of the first. Designated hitter Peter Creamer (Eastern New Mexico) had an RBI groundout, center fielder Clay Williamson (Cal State Fullerton) came home on an error and first baseman Blake Bass (Texas Tech) hit an RBI single give the Pearl their first lead of the game. The Legends rebounded, picking up one in the third and four in the fifth to overtake the Pearl at 5-3. The Pearl was unable to get their bats working again as they fell to the Legends 3-5 to earn a loss in the first round.

            On the mound, starter Jake Popovich (University of San Francisco) had a strong outing, giving up two runs and five hits, while striking out three through 4 2/3 innings. Logan Scott (University of California) came in to close out the fifth, giving up a two-run double with the bases loaded to put the Legends up 5-3. Scott would finish out the game, striking out four and giving up three hits and four runs.
