Baseball has officially begun again in Alameda, with the Neptune Beach Pearl kicking off their 2013 season June 1st against the Atwater Aviators. Over 250 fans came out to the College of Alameda to show their support for the hometown team with their usual spirit. As always,
The team got out to an early 1-0 lead in the third, thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Marquise Gill (Eastern Michigan). Despite strong pitching, the Pearl struggled defensively throughout the game. Neptune Beach would give up a run an inning from the 4th to the 7th, ultimately dropping the game 4-1. Head coach Brant Cummings believes that defensive lapses kept the win further out of reach, with the pitching being strong enough throughout the game.
After finishing second in the Far West League two seasons in a row, the Pearl have big expectations for this year, and the team has reason to be excited. A few familiar faces from the 2012 team are back in the dugout, while new players come from the Pac-12, SEC and Ivy League conferences, just to name a few. In particular, this team has several players who lack in-game experience, due to redshirting or being behind more senior players, but Cummings is looking forward to getting them out on the field. There is depth, he believes, particularly in the catching corps and Cummings has high hopes for the 2013 team.
The Pearl will be back in action June 2nd at 5 pm to finish off the series against the Atwood Aviators at the College of Alameda. Be sure to like the Neptune Beach Pearl on Facebook and follow the team on Twitter to stay up to date on the latest news.
