The Neptune Beach Pearl defeated the NorCal Longhorns 11-3 to kick off the 2011 season.
The Pearl struck first in the Top of the 2nd inning when Greg Ditmer (Saint Mary's College of California) hit a solo shot for the first Home Run in Neptune Beach Pearl History. The Pearl added 3 more runs in the inning and were leading 4-0 at the end of two innings.
The Longhorns fought back adding 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to cut the lead to 4-3.
That was as close as they would get on the evening. In the Top of the 7th the Pearl added 7 more runs highlighted by 2 rbi singles by Ditmer, Mike Senter (Oklahoma Panhandle) and Jeff Stephens (Sierra College). The Pearl led 11-3 after 7 innings, and Thomas Cortese (Saint Mary's College of California) and Derek Long (Chandler Gilbert CC) shut down the Longhorns in the 8th and 9th to end the game.
Collin Monagle (Sierra College) started on the mound for the Pearl and pitched 4 shutout innings.
The Pearl and Longhorns will meet again on Thursday afternoon at 4pm at Willie Stargell Field in Alameda for the Pearl's Home Opener.
