Facing off against the 2012 Far West League Champs for the first time since the league finals, the Neptune Beach Pearl took on the Humboldt Crabs Fridat June 21st. The Pearl started the scoring early and quickly put a 3-0 lead on the board in the 2nd inning. Eric Sapp got the action started with a single that turned into a double after a pitcher error, and ultimately ended up on third thanks to a passed ball, with Marquise Gill coming to first after being hit by a pitch. During the next at-bat, Trevor Ellison hit an RBI single to send Sapp home. Not long after, with a series of mishaps, Gill would score, with Casey Burns coming home after him.
The Crabs rebounded in the fourth, taking a run off of Pearl pitcher Michael Theofanopolous, and they would add two more in the fifth to bring Humboldt within one run of the lead. Theofanopolous would be done for the day after giving up 4 hits and 3 runs, with four strikeouts and walks. The Crabs would pull ahead in the eighth, scoring two earned runs off of John Williamson. The Pearl would ultimately lose the first game of the series, despite picking up another run in the ninth and having two on base, with the comeback falling just short.
The Pearl will take on the Crabs again at 4 pm in Arcata ballpark, and are now 3-3 in Far West League action.
